Extreme Engineering Challenge 2026

Snowfield Rescue Edition

CAGB, 6th Floor, Imperial College London
February 21-22, 2026

About the Challenge

Extreme Engineering Challenge is CGCU's flagship hardware makeathon, bringing together students from across engineering disciplines to design and prototype solutions inspired by extreme-condition scenarios. This year's theme, Snowfield Rescue, challenges participants to develop robust, practical engineering systems suitable for cold, high-risk environments. Teams will work intensively over a weekend to transform ideas into functioning prototypes.

The event emphasises rapid hardware prototyping, multidisciplinary collaboration, practical problem-solving under constraints, and iterative testing and refinement. With materials, food, and prototyping support provided, plus exclusive prizes and networking opportunities, this is your chance to engineer under extreme conditions.

FAQ

  • What is a makeathon?
A makeathon is a hardware-focused event where teams build physical prototypes. Unlike software hackathons, you'll work with electronics, mechanical systems, sensors, and real materials to create tangible engineering solutions.
  • How much does it cost?
The event is completely FREE! We provide all materials, prototyping support, food, refreshments, prizes, and exclusive merchandise.
  • Do I need a team?
You can apply individually or with a team (3-5 members). We'll help form teams during the icebreaker session on Friday 20 February if you're coming solo.
  • Who can apply? What if I have no experience?
The event is open to all Imperial College students from any engineering discipline and year group. No prior competition experience is required! Optional pre-event sessions (16-19 Feb) will help you build relevant technical skills.
  • What equipment and support will be provided?
We provide materials, prototyping tools, hardware components, and technical support throughout the event. Food and refreshments are included. Bring your laptop, chargers, and enthusiasm!
